However, in this case, the greatly disrupted chromosomes have reached a kind of steady-state which allows them to pass from generation to generation of dogs.
When I spotted this article, I knew I was going to mention the plight of the Tasmanian devils, and the spread, through their ranks of the facial cancers that are decimating their populations, but I see it was mentioned in the article.
