Hm. I read somewhere (maybe in Wilson's Biodiversity, but I don't remember) that according to the archeological record, when humans first moved into an area or a continent, the largest mammals were the first to go extinct, followed by the medium sized mammals, and so on down the line. Only recently have smaller animals, such as fish, rodents, birds and insects also started to be hit.

Hi Tara,
Yes ... It appears we (as humans) have worked our way down the food chain, with little or no consideration of living in balance with our animal food-sources. Only later -- I assume -- did some indigenous peoples realize the need to live in balance with Nature.
It's scary to think about .. but if humans depended on a SINGLE food-source .. then this over-harvesting would have lead to the extinction of the human race. As it is, when they drove one large species to extinction ... being omnivores .. they just shifted to another species.
Today ... we have the intelligence to do something about this ... The Question IS ... will we?
