Interesting that part of the measurement technique was bouncing light off the ocean floor. I'm not sure how that would work. Maybe some low frequency laser.

Quite Simple Young Man .... They took their measurements with shipboard multibeam echo sounders and aerial light detection bathymetric sensing instruments ...
