John W. Backus was known as the developer of the Fortran programming language, but I am more appreciative of his development, along with Peter Naur, of the Backus-Naur (BNF) and especially, Extended Backus-Naur Form (EBNF) ---- a notation for describing the grammer of a computer language, via production rules.
