An Ointment in the Fly
An Ointment in the Fly -- Schirber 2006 (323): 2 -- ScienceNOW
It now appears that scientists have found the first animal, that uses RNA interference (RNAi) to destroy harmful viruses within itself. It is the lowly fruit fly, Drosophila Melanogaster ....
Since viruses mutate constantly to avoid body defenses .. the scientists were able to find the three main RNAi genes, by looking for sections in the DNA that were evolving the most rapidly. Actually, faster than 97% of the other fruit fly DNA.
