Science & Technology at Scientific American.com: Study Strengthens Link between Virus and Weight Gain

The thing that frightens me at the moment about this ... is that somebody might get the *bright* idea to fatten farm animals up with these various viruses ... thus increasing the worldwide viral load of these specific pathogens, plus exposure to humans.

Bird Flu Genes Decoded; New Clue to How It Kills

Based on this study, scientists have found a molecular pathway in avian viruses that doesn't appear in human viruses. It is a protein that bonds to human cell proteins. This theoretically, may allow them to shut down chemical pathways in human cells, in order to inflict their damage and replicate.

Black Hole Puts Dent In Space-time

Black Hole Puts Dent In Space-time - Yahoo! News

This is the kind of anomaly that can cause great leaps in scientific thinking, when they are figured out.

This black hole, was caught emanating stable x-ray emissions at 450 Hz and also 300 Hz ... NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE .... Once in 1996, and again in 2005. Both frequencies! Black holes typically chug down material, in a spasmodic and chaotic manner, and that is exactly how they emit x-rays. The frequency and luminosity of the x-rays vary widely, over short periods of time.
The stable frequencies are probably caused by bent spacetime, known as "frame dragging", and will tell us things about the black hole's mass and rate of spin.
I don't think however, that this explains how the accretion disk gets gobbled up, in only a few months time.

Eon of dust storms traced to asteroid smash

New Scientist SPACE - Breaking News - Eon of dust storms traced to asteroid smash

Amazing! ... Scientists determine that a family of 300 asteroids, called the Veritas, were formed by a collision with another asteroid 8.2 million years ago. They did this by running a computer model that calculated the gravitational orbits ..... only they ran it in reverse, until the 300 objects coalesced into a single object.
The date was verified by taking ocean sediment samples, and finding a layer of sediment 8.2 million years old, that was laden with Helium-3, an isotope that is extremely rare on Earth. It is 100 million times more common in interplanetary dust, because it is generated by the solar wind coming from the sun.
This dust shower, created by the Veritas origination, rained down on Earth, and Earth's oceans, for 1.5 million years.
Scientists found another Helium-3 rich layer in the sediments, that was 35 million years old. They have yet to home in on the origin of this layer.
